A New Deal For Quilts

During the Roosevelt Administration’s efforts to combat the Great Depression, the quilt became an emblem of how to lift one’s family out of poverty, piece by piece. Janneken Smucker’s new book, A New Deal for Quilts, and the accompanying exhibition at the International Quilt Museum (October 6 through April 20, 2024) explore how the government encouraged Americans to create quilts individually and collectively in response to unemployment, displacement, and recovery efforts.

Janneken Smucker is a fifth-generation quilt maker, curator, and Professor of History at West Chester University outside of Philadelphia. Author of Amish Quilts: Crafting an American Icon. Janneken lectures and writes about quilts for popular and academic audiences. She hosts and co-produces Running Stitch, a QSOS Podcast, in partnership with the national non-profit Quilt Alliance.
